Bucket List No. 12 and No. 16 – Learn how to do a smoky eye and French plait my hair

19 Dec

I know very little about hair or make up.  Partly because I’m lazy and partly because I was a bit of a tomboy growing up.  Now I have a baby, hair and make up tricks are great for a quick pick me up so these two were good timing for this year’s bucket list.

Let’s start with the smoky eye.

I really wasn’t sure where to start.  First, I thought of signing up to a make-up class.  There’s always a voucher company like Wowcher offering deals on make-up courses.  Finding the time to go to one of these with a young baby isn’t easy though.

Next I Googled “how to do a smoky eye” and got a long list of how to guides (see links below).  Finally, I turned to my trusty EBay to see if they had any suitable make up.

Here’s the best news.  Make up companies have made it super easy to create a smoky eye look.  They’ve put together all the colours, brushes and sponges you’ll need in one handy box.

I used W7 Celebrity Secrets eye palette in brown which has four colours and step-by-step instructions on how to apply them.  Here’s the results…(excuse the bloodshot eyes, they come for free with a baby)

Now onto the French braid.  There’s loads of links telling you how to do a French plait and the one I found easiest is listed below.  There are also tutorials on YouTube which are a big help.

I cannot tell a lie – this one is going to take some practice, but I have mastered the basics.  This was trickier to capture on camera and the photos were pretty shoddy, but I’ll put up one just in case you think I’m telling porkies.

The verdict?  French plaiting needs perfecting but with the ready to use make-up set, the smoky eye is easy even for a novice like me.
